Mr. Ford went to Washington, again. Here’s what went down, and what comes next:
— DOUG FORD called the meeting “productive” and “positive” — despite the fact DONALD TRUMP got more and more dismissive in the run-up to it. Trump had initially called Ford “a very strong man” then, as the meeting got closer, he bragged about getting rid of Ford’s “little threat” of an electricity surcharge within an hour.
— U.S. Commerce Secretary HOWARD LUTNICK pulled no punches, either. Moments before the meeting, he was on Fox News blasting Canada. “Why are we doing all this business in Canada if they’re not respectful, if they’re not thankful?” he said.
— Still, it “was the best meeting I’ve ever had,” Ford told reporters outside the Commerce Department in Washington, adding it felt like “the temperature is being lowered.”
— No major commitments came out of the meeting, but both sides agreed to sit down again next week. That meeting will feature officials rather than politicians.
