SIX GOD — OLIVIA CHOW is Toronto’s next mayor.
It wasn’t exactly a slam dunk. Despite dominating the polls in the lead-up to last night’s byelection, Chow won by a narrower-than-expected margin — but it was a blowout nonetheless.
By the numbers: Chow took 37 per cent of the vote, with runner-up ANA BAILÃO coming in with a not-so-distant 32 per cent, thanks in part to an eleventh-hour endorsement from JOHN TORY. Premier DOUG FORD’s backing didn’t do much for MARK SAUNDERS, who wound up with just over 8 per cent support. MITZIE HUNTER — who gave up her seat at Queen’s Park to run — placed sixth, behind ANTHONY FUREY and JOSH MATLOW, with 2.9 per cent. And the rest.
But those waiting on Ford to put on the boxing gloves and step into the ring with someone he warned would be an “unmitigated disaster” for the city shouldn’t hold their breath.
Ford has played nice when politically advantageous (see: his on-again-off-again bromance with Liberal Prime Minister JUSTIN …
