First in Queen’s Park Observer — RECESS! — The summer sitting may be short and, depending on your vantage point, sweet.
Word on the street around Queen’s Park is that, soon after the five-week session that kicks off on August 8, the House will rise and MPPs will break again until after the municipal elections wrap up on October 24.
That means MPPs could be back in their ridings as soon as September 12.
Context: While summer sittings are relatively rare, the Ford government has sat during the usual break period before, including soon after they won their first mandate in 2018.
CIVIC STRONG — One item that’s now expected to get passed before the civic vote: A U.S.-style “strong mayor” system for the 416 and 613.
The change would skew decision-making power and authority away from municipal councillors and towards the mayors — especially when it comes to the budget and appointments — by giving them veto powers.
