ABOVE THE FOLD

DOUG FORD continues to suck up all the oxygen in the room and steer the news cycle (sorry, Oppo!) during this unofficial campaign summer. The latest:

If you needed another early election omen, look no further than the Premier’s latest motorist-friendly goody: Higher speed limits. Ford’s next populist-minded pitch would raise speed limits on all 400-series highways from 100 to 110 km/h “where it is safe to do so.”

The PCs have already raised the speed limit on other highway sections and now, Ford said he’s directed Transportation Minister PRABMEET SARKARIA to look into it.

Specifics are scant. “Those details will be forthcoming,” is all Ford’s spokesperson GRACE LEE would say. Sarkaria is expected to table an omnibus package when the House reconvenes, dubbed the “Reducing Gridlock and Saving You Time Act,” so the new speed limits could be rolled into that bill.
