LAST CALL — Roughly 24 hours after it was announced, the Ford government is nixing a controversial controlled entrance policy at northern LCBOs.
The pilot project would essentially require bouncers at the door to check IDs of folks who appear to be at least 17-years-old. That data would be uploaded and kept for 14 days, and shared with police in the event of a “safety or security” incident.
The problem: While similar programs have been successful in places like Manitoba, questions and concerns are swirling around how it would play out in Ontario.
Specifically, Kenora, Thunder Bay and Sioux Lookout all have high Indigenous populations, and there are worries that stricter ID’ing rules would target those communities. The Canadian Civil Liberties Association called it a “sweeping violation” of privacy rights with the potential to disproportionately impact First Nations.
