Breaking last night — STRIKE OUT — Parents, rejoice! School’s in session.

After a tough and unprecedented round of negotiations, the Ford government and CUPE’s education workers reached a tentative agreement by Sunday’s 5 p.m. deadline — averting a planned strike by 55,000 education workers.

The deal: There’s no new money for services, something union brass was pushing for — but the government did not budge. The tentative agreement is the same as the last one on offer: A $1-an-hour raise for each year of the four-year agreement, with the lowest paid workers getting about 4 per cent annually and those earning more than $70,000 receiving 1.8 per cent.

“As a mom, I don’t like this deal. As a worker, I don’t like this deal…It falls short,” said CUPE-OSBCU president LAURA WALTON.

But, as some workers told Queen’s Park Observer, many school support staff thought it was a decent deal and wanted the chance to vote on it.
