The Ontario Health Coalition and Advocacy Centre for the Elderly gear up for a Charter fight against Bill 7.

BY THE NUMBERS — LTC TRANSFERS: In the face of fresh criticism and a looming Charter challenge, the Ford government has unveiled the numbers behind its controversial Bill 7 — which allows (mainly elderly) alternate level of care patients to be transferred to a faraway long-term care home they did not choose, or force them to cough up $400-a-day to stay in hospital.

The controversial move — which the PCs say is aimed at freeing up much-needed hospital beds — is facing a future constitutional challenge from the Ontario Health Coalition and Advocacy Centre for the Elderly.

Counsel for the organizations say the law allows hospitals to override patient consent and targets a specific group: the elderly, who can be sent 70 kilometres away from their home of choice in southern Ontario and up to 150 km (or more) in the north.
