Another day, another doozy of a presser.
DOUG FORD made it official: the municipal speed camera experiment is going the way of the dodo.
Against the backdrop of giant road signs, and side-by-side with former political rival, now Vaughan Mayor STEVEN DEL DUCA, the Premier railed against the program (which his own government enacted) as little more than a “tax grab” and promised legislation in the coming weeks to ban them provincewide.
On timing and vandalism: Asked if he was caving to vandals who’ve been taking down the cameras in Toronto, Ford said: “Not at all. I’ve never condoned any vandalism of any sort. This is nothing more than a tax grab…no officer would ever give you a ticket for five or six kilometers over.”
On school zones: Pressed by reporters, Ford said municipalities with existing speed cameras in school zones would have to install bigger signs with flashing lights to get drivers to slow down.
