The keffiyeh continues to be a lightning rod at Queen’s Park, and on Tuesday, the Legislature descended into chaos.
New Democrats’ failed in their second attempt to get unanimous consent to reverse the Speaker’s ban, and to have the keffiyeh deemed a cultural symbol rather than a political one. All leaders, including DOUG FORD, have echoed the sentiment, calling the ban too divisive.
But it has caused the biggest rift in Ford’s own benches. The Premier seemed to capitulate following last week’s failed attempt to whip the votes, allowing his MPPs a free vote on the NDP’s second motion. This time around, more — at least five or so — defied the Premier’s public stance and shot down the NDP’s motion by saying “no.”
Then, mayhem: Protesters brandishing keffiyehs in the public galleries and yelling “free Palestine” at the PCs were removed by security. Moments later, Independent SARAH JAMA — who was turfed from the NDP caucus for insubordination amid the drama over her remarks…
