ABOVE THE FOLD
Breaking last night — BOOZE NEWS: Tipplers, rejoice! Booze will hit Ontario corner store shelves sooner than you think — and it’s fuelling early election speculation.
I’ve confirmed Premier DOUG FORD is going back to his populist roots and is poised to announce a fast-tracked timeline to liberalize beer, wine and cooler sales this morning on his home turf in Etobicoke, the heart of Ford Nation.
Convenience stores, grocery markets and gas stations will be able to sell alcohol by this fall, instead of the previously scheduled 2026. Potential peddlers will have to apply for a licence to sell in the coming weeks, while The Beer Store will still handle recycling and bottle returns.
Ford already announced much of the details late last year — including that up to 8,500 more stores could soon be selling alcohol. Catch up.
