DOUG FORD was cagey when pressed on the possibility of incentives to help people buy electric vehicles — something his government cancelled soon after coming to power in 2018.
Now, the Premier is all about EV manufacturing — announcing $131.6 million each from the provincial and federal governments alongside Prime Minister JUSTIN TRUDEAU, which will go toward upgrading Honda Canada’s Alliston plant to make electric hybrid vehicles.
But don’t expect any incentives. Ford defended his decision to cut the previous Liberal rulers’ rebate program: “Since we’ve been in office, electric vehicles have tripled in sales, so I guess that was a good decision.” That said, sales in Ontario lag behind other provinces — but Ford also pumped up earlier moves to spur EV battery manufacturing and to bring in charging stations at ONRoute spots.
