THAT WAS NOT SO EASY — The Service-Ontario-in-Staples story is unravelling — and it’s fast becoming a contender for the Ford government’s next problem.

Here are the big questions and concerns swirling around the elusive deal to move at least 11 Service Ontario outlets into Staples stores:

The contract: So, why Staples? That’s not exactly clear at this point — though the government has laid out some general criteria, including size, parking, location and willingness to participate.

Still, there was no competitive bid process and the contract was sole-sourced — which means other companies couldn’t throw their hats in the ring — according to Richard Southern at CityNews, who’s been leading reporting on the matter.

MIA: Meanwhile, as far as I can tell, Staples Canada hasn’t had an active listing on the lobbyists’ registry since March 2022. At the time, it was about staying open amid the pandemic.
