ABOVE THE FOLD

BIG CAPS ON CAMPUS — Immigration Minister MARC MILLER made it official: the feds are moving to cap the number of international students. Here’s how the news is landing in Ontario.

Over the next two years, the cap will be applied across the country on a per capita basis, which means some provinces, like Ontario, will see a roughly 50 per cent cut. For 2024, Ottawa will sign-off on about 360,000 permits, which amounts to a 35 per cent reduction from 2023.

Provinces and territories will then decide how permits are handed out to their colleges and universities.

Miller took aim at “bad actors” and pointed the finger at some private colleges. “It’s unacceptable that some private institutions have taken advantage of international students by operating under-resourced campuses, lacking supports for students and charging high tuition fees all the while significantly increasing their intake of international students.”
