ABOVE THE FOLD

BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO — Peel Region is headed for Splitsville.

Drip, drip, drip: I’ve confirmed what was widely leaked last evening: That Mississauga and Brampton will become standalone cities — something Premier DOUG FORD had all but confirmed — but the fate of Caledon is still hazy.

Politically speaking: This is going to make it tougher for BONNIE CROMBIE to leave City Hall and make a run for Liberal leader — and Ford would prefer it that way, according to political insiders.

There’s no doubt Crombie would be a heavyweight contender in the Liberal race who could give Ford and the PCs a run for their money — but the Mississauga Mayor has long pushed for her city to be wholly independent, and now that it’s actually happening, she might want to stay on.

“She made him blink,” texted one source close to Crombie.
