Another day, another teaser announcement from Long-Term Care Minister ROD PHILLIPS, whose hotly anticipated bill overhauling the walloped sector is expected to hit the Clerk’s table any day now. A big clue on career development opportunities for personal support workers and nurses in LTC is expected this morning.
Phillips dropped another hint yesterday — the province is forking out $20 million to hire 193 inspectors and to launch a proactive inspections program. Such inspections virtually ground to a halt in 2019, with reports showing only nine out of 626 homes received a “resident quality inspection.” The new program will double the number of inspectors by next fall, so there will be one inspector for every two homes and enough of them to visit every home unannounced, while still responding to complaints.
It will be the “best inspections regime” in the country, Phillips told reporters.
