Don’t call it a comeback.

MARY-MARGARET MCMAHON, former Toronto city councillor, was one of just eight Grits elected in June, helping grow the decimated caucus by one when she wrested the Beaches—East York seat from the NDP, who were down an incumbent.

Here’s how she did it, in McMahon’s own words, and what’s next for the rookie MPP — who’s also not ruling out a bid to replace outgoing leader STEVEN DEL DUCA.

2022 was a brutal showing for the Grits. So, how does it feel to be one of the few elected? I’m honoured and I’m very excited. But it was really bittersweet, because I don’t think many of us expected that outcome. I didn’t expect to be almost basically the only new riding. I ran with amazing, talented, creative candidates and was so disappointed and devastated that they didn’t get in. I didn’t hear that at the doors and I don’t think we saw that coming.

Tell me more about that. What I was hearing at the doors was a lot of undecideds. I would try and convince people…
