The First Ministers wrapped their annual summer meeting in Victoria, B.C. without a date for a meeting with Prime Minister JUSTIN TRUDEAU to discuss their biggest beef: increasing the share of provincial health funding from 22 per cent to 35 — something they’ve been pushing for years.
“Come to the table,” nearly every Premier demanded at their closing joint presser in which they stuck to their talking points.
Ontario’s DOUG FORD was no exception, though he was a little more forgiving when it came to his personal relationship with Deputy PM CHRYSTIA FREELAND and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister DOMINIC LEBLANC.
LeBlanc was called out for discussing health care cash in the media but not yet sitting down with the Premiers themselves.
B.C. Premier JOHN HORGAN, who hosted the meeting as this year’s COF chair, acknowledged concerns about whether the cash should come with strings attached — that is, having the feds dictate how the extra funding should be spent.
