PARISH KNOCKED OFF THE TICKET — The NDP has dropped controversial star candidate STEVE PARISH in Ajax.

Parish — the town’s former longest-serving mayor — found himself in hot water with some Jewish advocacy groups and within his own party ranks over comments he made in the naming and renaming of a local street after a Nazi naval officer. Parish apologized, and NDP Leader ANDREA HORWATH stood by him — until now.

Horwath has changed her mind.

“Our party is committed to naming and correcting injustice, and vowing to do better — and as a candidate he has not met the mark. Specifically, Mr. Parish has not denounced the decision to have a street named after a high-ranking German officer in the Second World War. Perhaps most importantly he has not demonstrated that he understands why that is harmful.”
