AMBLER CASE DISMISSED — STELLA AMBLER has lost her fight in Simcoe—Grey, where she was battling Premier DOUG FORD’s appointment of Collingwood Mayor BRIAN SAUNDERSON as the PCs’ 2022 candidate. Her lawyers were in court Friday arguing that appointment violated the party’s constitution and statutes for fair and open nomination contests.
But Justice EDWARD BELOBABA said the case shouldn’t have even been brought to the courtroom and should be dealt with within the party. Belobaba acknowledged Ambler’s concerns but said he didn’t want “a court of law stepping into a private association’s procedures.”
“There are internal complaint and protest and appeal rights clearly set out in the nomination rules that have not yet been completed — how do I even begin as a Superior Court judge to get involved in this particular dispute?”
The PCs lawyers argued something similar, noting no court would have the authority to compel a party leader to endorse a particular candidate.
