First in Queen’s Park Observer — FUNDRAISING WATCH: MARIT STILES is bringing in the big bucks.
As the sole NDP leadership contender thus far, the two-term MPP for Davenport and former Education critic has earned at least $63,565 from more than 100 donors.
That’s according to real-time disclosures from Elections Ontario, but the numbers may change slightly as receipts are consolidated. Stiles’s campaign says they’ll release internal figures “in a couple weeks.”
Campaigns don’t come cheap. Stiles has already paid the party’s $55,000 registration fee in full. She’s also been touring the province, with stops in Kingston, Sudbury and Brampton last week.
The bottom line: A leadership contest is a big money-making opportunity for any political party. The buzz and excitement has the power to pull in new members, more cash, and plenty of headlines.
But with less than two weeks until the deadline to sign up, Stiles remains the sole contender.
