DOUG FORD and his fellow first ministers met with Prime Minister JUSTIN TRUDEAU in Ottawa to suss out a counterattack should DONALD TRUMP make good on his threat to slap hefty tariffs on Canadian goods.
There was much talk about how the first ministers are on the same page — but Alberta’s DANIELLE SMITH threw a wrench in all that when she put out a statement denouncing Ottawa’s approach, which could include levies on Canadian fossil fuel exports.
Officials aren’t revealing their hand publicly when it comes to retaliatory tariffs in case they need to negotiate with Washington. As Ford put it: “You’re in a card game, you don’t show your opposition your cards…You hold onto those aces.” Still, Trudeau says “everything is on the table.”
Smith, who just met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, attended the Premiers’ meeting virtually and skipped out on the closing presser, which wound up featuring both Trudeau and the rest of the Premiers. She also refused to sign off on…
