NEW SHERIFF AT THE PARK — The Legislature is getting a new Sergeant-At-Arms: TIM McGOUGH, a 40-year veteran of the policing field who hails from the Medicine Hat Police Service in Wild Rose Country, where he served as an inspector, professional standards investigator, and acting chief.
While the Sergeant-at-Arms is mostly ceremonial in the chamber, it’s a crucial position that oversees the security and functioning of the entire Legislative Precinct.
Background: As we scooped in December, MIKE CIVIL took over the interim role from now-retired JACKIE GORDON. Word on the street was that Civil wanted the full-on position, but backed off when the PCs brought in a new process that saw a bipartisan committee, rather than the Speaker, in charge of making the pick.
Indeed, McGough was recommended by a two-person panel featuring the PCs TREVOR JONES and the NDP’s JENNIE STEVENS. The Grits and Green don’t have a spot because they lack recognized status — but all parties unanimously …
