SCHOOLED — Ontario is ponying up more cash for colleges and universities. Will it be enough?
The hotly anticipated funding announcement from Colleges and Universities Minister JILL DUNLOP laid out nearly $1.3 billion over three years with an eye to “stabilizing” the sector, which is grappling with Ottawa’s foreign student cap and an ongoing tuition freeze — something the PCs are holding to until 2026-27, which takes us to the next election.
By the numbers: Some $903 million will be put into a new Postsecondary Education Sustainability Fund, $203 million of which will go to schools with “greater financial need,” based on geography, enrolment and reliance on the higher tuition that international students pay. Another $167.4 million is for capital repairs, with $10 million specifically for small rural and northern campuses, while $100 million will go to STEM programs and $65.4 million to research and innovation.
