TABUNS TAKEOVER — And the next leader of the Official Opposition NDP is: PETER TABUNS, longtime MPP who’s represented Toronto—Danforth since 2006.
Tabuns will temporarily take up the mantle from ANDREA HORWATH, who resigned after the party lost nine seats in her fourth election as leader. A senior party source confirmed Tabuns was recommended as interim leader by the 31-member caucus following a Monday meeting.
What’s next: The NDP’s executive will now go through the formality of considering Tabuns for the top job, with final approval expected from its provincial council, per the party’s constitution. That said, it’s pretty much a “done deal,” as one source put it.
That process will be carried out within the next two weeks. The party will also lay out the rules for the full-on leadership contest, including a date and timeline for a vote, which is expected this year or next.
