THEY’RE BACK — MPPs will kick off the summer session on August 8, I’ve confirmed. The date leaked out to reporters following Wednesday’s cabinet meeting, the first since Premier DOUG FORD rejigged his front bench.
The first order of business: Topping the agenda when the House reconvenes next month will be picking a Speaker. All MPPs get a vote on that. Current Speaker TED ARNOTT has already said he’s hoping to stay on as MPP referee while PC NINA TANGRI, who recently lost her Associate Minister post, is also looking to throw her hat in the ring. There will also be a Throne Speech to mark the new parliament.
MPPs could sit through to September and beyond — the House was initially scheduled to reconvene September 12.
The main event: Enshrining the PCs spring budget, which was tabled too-soon-to-be-passed before the Legislature broke for the campaign and served as their re-election platform.
